How to Clean and Store a Hot Water Bottle Safely

A hot water bottle should be emptied, dried and stored carefully after use. Good care makes the bottle easier to inspect and helps prevent damage from trapped moisture, heat, sunlight, oils or heavy objects.

This guide covers traditional rubber and PVC hot water bottles. Always follow the care instructions supplied with your specific bottle and cover first. If those instructions differ from general advice, the product-specific instructions take priority.

How to clean a hot water bottle safely

1. Let the bottle cool before handling it

Do not start cleaning or emptying a bottle while the water is still hot enough to scald. Keep it upright in a safe place until it is cool enough to handle. Do not sit on it, lie on it or place weight on it while you wait.

2. Remove the cover and stopper

Once the bottle is cool, remove the fabric cover if it is detachable. Unscrew the stopper and keep it in a safe place. Separating these parts lets you inspect the neck and threads and allows the bottle and cover to dry properly.

3. Empty the bottle completely

Pour the used water away over a sink. Hold the opening away from your face and body, especially if the water is still warm. Do not leave water inside the bottle between uses.

4. Follow the bottle's own cleaning instructions

Routine care usually focuses on emptying and thorough drying rather than deep cleaning. If the bottle needs rinsing, use clean water only unless the manufacturer specifically permits another method.

Do not improvise with bleach, solvents, oils, disinfectants, vinegar, baking soda or abrasive tools. Do not place the bottle in a dishwasher or washing machine unless its supplied instructions explicitly say that this is allowed. Unapproved chemicals, high heat and mechanical washing may affect the bottle material, seams, neck or stopper.

5. Wipe the outside gently

If the outside needs attention, wipe it with a clean, soft, damp cloth in line with the product instructions. Avoid aggressive scrubbing, sharp brushes and household solvents. The purpose is to remove surface dust without stretching, scratching or chemically exposing the material.

6. Clean the cover separately

Check the care label on the fabric cover. Different covers can require different treatment: knit, fleece, plush and faux-fur fabrics should not automatically be washed in the same way. Close any fastenings, use the stated wash method and let the cover dry fully before putting it back on the bottle.

How to dry a hot water bottle

Allow the bottle to drain with the stopper removed. ACCC Product Safety advises hanging a hot water bottle upside down and making sure it is completely dry inside and out before storage. Position it securely so it cannot fall, become sharply folded or be stretched by its neck.

Let it air-dry naturally. Keep it away from radiators, heaters, direct sunlight, hair dryers, tumble dryers, ovens and microwaves. Never heat the bottle itself to speed up drying.

Dry the stopper separately and inspect its threads and seal. If the stopper is damaged, distorted or no longer seals correctly, stop using the bottle. Do not substitute a stopper from another bottle unless the manufacturer confirms that it is compatible.

How to store a hot water bottle

Store it empty and with the stopper removed

Keep the bottle empty. Leave the stopper out so that any remaining moisture can escape. Store the stopper beside the bottle where it will stay clean and will not be lost.

Choose a cool, dark and dry place

Keep the bottle away from sunlight, moisture, oils, grease and heat sources. A cupboard or other shaded, dry storage area is usually more suitable than a windowsill, bathroom shelf, boiler cupboard or space beside a radiator.

Do not fold or crush it

Store the bottle flat or hanging upside down, following its instructions. Do not place boxes, bedding or other heavy items on top. Avoid tight folds, sharp objects and anything that could pull or distort the neck and seams.

Keep the clean cover dry

Once the cover is completely dry, store it loosely with the bottle or refit it only if doing so will not trap moisture or conceal the bottle during future inspections. Before the next use, remove the cover so you can check the entire bottle body.

Inspect it before storing and before the next use

Check the bottle body, neck, seams and stopper for cracks, splits, brittleness, fading, thinning, distortion, leaks or a poor seal. A cover can hide damage, so inspect the bottle itself. Do not patch, glue or repair a damaged hot water bottle.
