How to Pre-Warm a Bed with a Hot Water Bottle Safely

A hot water bottle can be used to take the chill off bedding before you get into bed. The important word is before: use it only to pre-warm the bed, then remove it before getting in. Do not sleep with, lie on or put pressure on a standard hot water bottle.

Short answer: inspect the bottle, fill it safely with hot but never boiling water, check the stopper for leaks, fit a suitable cover, place it on top of the bedding where it cannot be crushed, and remove it before anyone gets into bed.

Why remove the hot water bottle before bed?

A hot water bottle can split or leak if it is worn, damaged, overfilled, poorly sealed or placed under pressure. Rolling onto it, lying on it or trapping it beneath body weight increases the risk. Prolonged contact with a hot surface can also cause a burn gradually.

ACCC Product Safety advises using a hot water bottle only to heat the bed and taking it out before getting in. It also advises against lying, resting or putting weight on the bottle. The safest bedtime routine therefore ends with removing the bottle completely, not moving it to another part of the bed.

How to pre-warm a bed safely

1. Inspect the empty bottle

Remove the cover and check the entire bottle before every use. Look at the body, seams, neck and stopper. Stop using the bottle if you see cracks, splits, brittleness, fading, thinning, distortion, leakage or damaged stopper threads. Do not patch or glue a damaged hot water bottle.

Many bottles have a date wheel near the neck. Use it together with the bottle's condition, storage history and manufacturer guidance when deciding whether replacement is due. Our hot water bottle replacement guide explains the warning signs in more detail.

2. Prepare the bed first

Make sure the bed is clear and dry. Remove sharp objects and anything heavy that could press against the bottle. Decide where you want to take the chill off the bedding, but keep the bottle easy to see and easy to remove. Never wedge it beneath a mattress, heavy cushion or sleeping person.

3. Use hot, never boiling, water

Heat the water separately. Never pour boiling water into a conventional hot water bottle. If water has just boiled, allow it to cool and follow the temperature instructions supplied with your bottle. Never place an OliviaLiving hot water bottle in a microwave or oven.

4. Fill slowly over a sink

Hold the bottle upright by the neck over a clear sink, with the opening facing away from your body. Pour slowly to reduce splashing. Fill no more than two-thirds full and do not ask a child to fill the bottle.

5. Expel excess air and seal the stopper

Keeping the bottle upright, gently lower it until the water approaches the opening and excess air has been expelled. Check that the stopper and threads are clean, then screw the stopper in straight until it is secure. Do not force or cross-thread it.

6. Perform a leak check

Dry the outside and keep the opening away from your body. Hold the bottle over the sink and carefully turn it to confirm that no water escapes around the stopper, neck or seams. If you find any leak, empty the bottle safely and stop using it.

7. Fit a dry cover

Use a cover that fits the bottle. The cover creates a barrier and helps reduce direct contact with the hot surface, but it does not make a damaged or leaking bottle safe. Make sure both the cover and the outside of the bottle are dry before placing it near bedding.

8. Place it where it cannot be crushed

Lay the covered bottle on top of the bedding in the area you want to pre-warm. Keep it flat, visible and free from body weight or heavy objects. Do not sit, kneel, lean or lie on it. Keep children and pets away while the bottle is hot.

9. Remove it before getting into bed

Before anyone gets into bed, take the hot water bottle out completely and place it in a stable location where it cannot fall, be stepped on or be reached by a child or pet. Check the bedding for any dampness. If you find moisture, do not assume it is condensation; inspect the bottle and stopper before any further use.

Should you pre-warm a child's bed?

ACCC safety guidance strongly recommends not using hot water bottles to warm a child's bed. Children have more delicate skin and may not recognise or communicate heat and pain in time. Never give a hot water bottle to a baby or young child, and never ask a child to fill or carry a hot bottle.

For any person who cannot reliably identify heat, pain or leakage, use only an alternative specifically suitable for that person and follow professional or product-specific guidance.

Do not combine it with unsafe heating methods

  • Do not microwave or oven-heat a conventional hot water bottle.
  • Do not use boiling water.
  • Do not reheat the bottle externally while it still contains water.
  • Do not place the bottle on or against a switched-on electric blanket or other powered heater.
  • Do not put multiple bottles where they can press against each other or become trapped.
  • Do not leave a filled bottle unattended in a child's room.

After pre-warming the bed

Let the bottle cool in a secure upright position. When the water is cool enough to handle safely, empty it completely. Allow the bottle to dry with the stopper removed, then store it empty in a cool, dark, dry place away from sunlight, heat, oils, chemicals and sharp objects. Do not fold it or place weight on it.

Why BS 1970:2012 still requires careful use

Every OliviaLiving hot water bottle is made to BS 1970:2012. The standard is an important safety and quality baseline for the bottle, but it does not prevent wear, incorrect filling, a loose stopper or damage caused by pressure. Inspection and the supplied instructions remain essential.

Frequently asked questions

Can I leave a hot water bottle in bed overnight?

No. Use it only to pre-warm the bed, then remove it before getting in. Do not sleep with, lie on or put pressure on a standard hot water bottle.

Should the bottle go under the duvet?

Keep the bottle visible and free from pressure. Do not bury it beneath heavy bedding, a mattress, cushions or a person. Remove it completely before anyone gets into bed.

Can I use a hot water bottle with an electric blanket?

Do not place a hot water bottle on or against a switched-on electric blanket or powered bed warmer. Follow the instructions supplied with every heating product and do not combine heating methods unless their manufacturers explicitly permit it.

What if the bedding feels damp?

Remove the bottle and inspect it over a sink. Check the stopper, neck and seams. If leakage is possible, stop using the bottle rather than tightening it and returning it to the bed.

Which OliviaLiving bottle can be used for pre-warming?

Choose a bottle whose capacity, cover and filled weight suit you, then follow its specific instructions. The Classic 2L Hot Water Bottle has a striped soft cover, while the Knit Cover 2L has a removable cable-knit cover. Both must be removed before getting into bed.
