How to Use a Hot Water Bottle Safely | OliviaLiving

A hot water bottle is simple to use, but safe preparation matters every time. The steps below apply to standard OliviaLiving hot water bottles and should be followed together with the instructions supplied with the product.

Before filling

  1. Inspect the bottle. Remove the cover and check the body, seams, neck and stopper for cracks, brittleness, wear or leaks.
  2. Prepare a stable area. Fill the bottle over a sink or clear work surface where it can remain upright.
  3. Heat water separately. Never place the bottle in a microwave or oven.

How to fill it safely

  1. Boil fresh water, then allow it to cool. Never pour boiling water directly into the bottle.
  2. Hold the bottle upright by the neck and pour slowly. Stop at no more than two-thirds capacity.
  3. Lower the bottle carefully until water reaches the neck opening, which expels excess air.
  4. Screw in the stopper until secure. Do not overtighten or force damaged threads.
  5. Turn the bottle over a sink briefly and check the neck and stopper for leaks.
  6. Fit the cover before use and keep the bottle away from bare skin.

Use it for everyday warmth

Move the bottle regularly rather than leaving it against the same area for a long time. A cover reduces direct contact but does not eliminate burn risk. Do not sit or lie on the bottle, place heavy items on it or use it as a cushion.

If you use it to pre-warm a bed, remove the bottle before getting into bed. Do not sleep with a standard hot water bottle. Keep it away from pets, sharp objects and any surface that could puncture it.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Using boiling water.
  • Heating the bottle itself in a microwave or oven.
  • Filling beyond two-thirds capacity.
  • Skipping the leak check.
  • Continuing to use a worn, brittle or damaged bottle.
  • Leaving it in prolonged contact with one area of skin.
  • Allowing children to fill or use it without continuous responsible adult supervision.

After use

Empty the bottle completely and let it drain. Store it with the stopper removed in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight and heat. Check it again before the next use and replace it immediately if there is any deterioration.

What BS 1970:2012 means

OliviaLiving product listings identify the hot water bottles as made to BS 1970:2012, the British safety standard for hot water bottles. The standard and careful use work together; one never replaces the other.
